CASTINE, Maine – January 27, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped a 69-65 decision at Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday night.
The Chargers have their four game winning streak snapped and drop to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer will play at Husson on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Mariners improve to 9-8 on the season and 6-5 in the conference. Maine Maritime hosts New England College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Emmani Robinson led the Chargers with 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.
Tianna Sugars added 14 points, a team-high eight rebounds, a steal and a block.
Amanda Calvo chipped in with 13 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Alayne Felix led the Mariners with 20 points, seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Melinda Ogden ended the evening with 18 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists. Kristi Willey finished just shy of a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Willey hit two threes and Felix added a layup in the first two minutes of play, to give the Mariners an 8-0 lead.
The Mariners led by as much as 14 points twice in the opening quarter and took a 20-12 advantage into the second quarter. The Chargers began to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter, closing the gap to five points with 6:01 remaining, but the Mariners scored five-straight to retake a double-digit lead with 5:13 to go.
Colby-Sawyer cut the Mariners' lead to four twice in the closing minutes of the half, but the home team entered halftime with a 40-33 lead.
The Chargers put together a six-point run midway through the third quarter to cut the lead to 46-44. and came all the way back with another run to end the quarter sending the game to the fourth tied at 51-51.
The Mariners took a five-point advantage to open up the fourth quarter, following a three from Willey and two free throws by Caitlin Kane.
Tianna Sugars hit two from the line for the Chargers to close the gap to three (56-53) with 7:58 to play.
Emmani Robinson made a layup to cut the Mariners' lead to 63-61 at 1:39 but the Mariners went on a four-point run to take a 67-61 and secure the victory.
