Chargers Pull Away in Third Quarter to Down Lyndon, 80-55

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - January 17, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team used a 23-point third quarter to pull away and down Lyndon, 80-55, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers earn the regular season sweep over Lyndon after defeating the Hornets 63-44 in December.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Thomas on Friday and UMaine-Farmington on Saturday. Lyndon falls to 5-8 and 3-6 in the conference. The Hornets will play at Pine Manor on Thursday.

Colby-Sawyer senior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) was 5-for-9 from the floor and made all three three-point attempts to finish with 14 points. Junior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) also had 14 points. Freshman Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) contributed 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Senior Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) was the fourth Charger in double figures with 12 points, while freshman Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) just missed a double-double of nine points and nine rebounds.

The Hornets were led by Mikayla Hodge's (Newbury, Vt.) 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks with Gabby Foy (Wilton, Maine) pitching in fourteen points, five rebounds, and two assists.

The first couple of minutes were back and forth before a trey from Gabby Foy put the home team on top 7-5. The Hornets would hold a lead for the remainder of the quarter, but the Chargers received an Ally Mignault layup for the final basket of the frame to only trail by two (22-20) at the end of 10 minutes.

Kristin Ellis opened the second to tie the score, before Foy gave the lead back to Lyndon. The Chargers then found momentum and scored nine straight points to take the lead for good. The Hornets pulled within five midway through the frame, but four points from Calvo and a bucket from Emmani Robinson put Colby-Sawyer comfortably in front at 39-28 with 1:01 to play. Foy would finish out the second stanza with five straight points bringing the Hornets within six, but Colby-Sawyer held a 39-33 lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer pulled away in the third quarter making 9-of-16 field goal attempts and holding Lyndon to three made field goals. The Chargers outscored the home team 23-10 to take a 62-43 lead with one quarter to play.

Junior Alli Barrett (Kittery, Maine) scored five points for the Chargers to lead all players in the fourth quarter as Colby-Sawyer cruised to the 80-55 victory.
