NEW LONDON, N.H. - September 8, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer College men's tennis team began its 2016-17 season with a 9-0 loss to a tough Division II Southern New Hampshire University squad.
The Chargers will resume their fall portion of the schedule on Sunday at Nichols in a rematch of last year's NCAA First Round. Southern New Hampshire, which won the Northeast-10 championship last year and has reached the NCAA Tournament five of the past six seasons, go to 1-0.Â
The No. 1 doubles team of
Gustav Jigrup and
Andrew Peloquin fought hard against Miguel Marreiros and Tiago Fernandes, but fell 8-4. The Penmen also got an 8-4 win at No. 3 against a gritty performance from Colby-Sawyer's
Ryan Sawyer and
Will Triebel.Â
In singles action,
Alex Wright battled Ricardo Marreiros for the closest result of the afternoon. Wright pushed his opponent to the brink in the first set but fell 7-5, before dropping the second 6-2. Â
