NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to Division II opponent Southern New Hampshire, 7-2.
Southern New Hampshire goes to 1-0 and will host Stonehill on Wednesday for a Northeast-10 opener. Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 1-1 and will travel to another Division II foe tomorrow in Saint Michael's.
The Penmen swept all three doubles matches, but they were all close. Colby-Sawyer juniors
Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and
Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) battled Lindsay Baum and Rachel Wagner at No. 3, but the Penmen escaped with a 9-7 win. The No. 1 and No. 2 matches were won by SNHU by identical 8-5 scores. Sofia Morais and Kaitlyn Poje combined to defeat Colby-Sawyer's top duo of junior
Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and sophomore
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.). At No. 2, Abla Chadli and Anna Sala edged junior
Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.).
Colby-Sawyer's two points came in singles play.
Evelyn Miller won in three sets at the second flight over Sofia Morais. After Miller took the first set 6-3, Morais evened the match with a 6-4 victory in the second. With the match already in hand for SNHU, Miller won a pro set 10-7 to win her match.
Aislinn O'Connor also earned a point for Colby-Sawyer on Saturday. She won at the fourth flight in straight sets. O'Connor cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Chadli, Sala, Poje and Baum won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
