Strong First Half Lifts Women's Lacrosse Past Thomas, 10-3

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 9, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team defeated Thomas College, 10-3, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.  

Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Chargers will play against Green Mountain on Tuesday. The game will be played at Castleton. Thomas falls to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the NAC. The Terriers will host Green Mountain next Saturday.

Senior Sara Berry (Bowdoinham, Maine) scored three goals and had four ground balls to lead the Chargers. Sophomore Molly Mulcahy (Nashua, N.H.) scored twice and added two assists. Sophomore Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) and senior Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, N.H.) had two goals and an assist apiece. Sophomore Bailey Starr (Barre, Vt.) accounted for the other Charger goal.

Thomas received single goals from junior Sophia LaVallee (Pawling, N.Y.), sophomore Samantha Greenlaw (Windham, Maine) and senior Erin Nelligan (Walpole, Mass.).

Colby-Sawyer goalie Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) made a save in each half to record her fifth win of the season. Thomas goalie Brittany Fox (Lovell, Maine) kept the Terriers close by making 13 saves.

The Terriers got on the board first 3:37 into the game on Greenlaw's 17th tally of the season. Whearty knotted the game ten minutes later with her team leading 26th goal of the season. The Chargers scored five more times before the half ended; including three times in the final 45 seconds to take a 6-1 lead into the break.

Thomas opened the second half with a goal from Nelligan, but Mulcahy's second of the game 29 seconds later put Colby-Sawyer back in front by five, 7-2. After a LaVallee goal for the Terriers made it 7-3, the Chargers scored the final three goals of the game to secure the 10-3 victory.
