NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 20, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer men's tennis team served the University of Southern Maine its first loss of the season with a 5-4 triumph in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-5 and will continue a four-match homestand on Saturday with a 1 p.m. North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tilt with Castleton. The Huskies drop to 7-1 and will resume Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home match against Rhode Island College.
The Chargers were able to take an important lead heading in to singles by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Ross Kenney (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and
Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England) gave Colby-Sawyer its first point with an impressive 8-0 victory over Sebastien Taylor and Michael Wong at No. 3.
Dean Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) teamed with
Ryan Sawyer (Edgartown, Mass.) to defeat Samuel Holland and Eric Berry-Sandelin, 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles slot. The Huskies lone doubles point came at No. 1 as Tyler Adams and Kyle Curley defeated
Gustav Jigrup (Vastra Frolunda, Sweden) and
Shawn Bissonette (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), 8-4.
Southern Maine won the top three singles matches, but the Chargers were able to secure the match by winning at four, five and six.
Ryan Broderick (Londonderry, N.H.) did not drop a game in a straight sets win over Wong at No. 6. Kenney cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the fifth flight over Taylor. Boodakian clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Holland.
Adams defeated Jigrup at No. 1 6-0, 6-3.
The No. 2 and No. 3 players split their first two sets and with the match already decided, the third set was played to a 10-point tiebreaker. Curley dropped the first set 6-1, but rebounded for a 6-3, 10-8 win over Wright at No. 2. Berry-Sandelin edged Sawyer 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 at No.3.
