NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 17, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College and Husson University baseball teams split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader for the second straight day. Husson came from behind to take game one 5-4, while Colby-Sawyer cruised to a 15-0 win in game two.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 10-14 overall and 7-9 in the NAC. The Chargers will travel to Lyndon on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Husson goes to 15-12 overall and 10-4 in conference play. The Eagles will play a single game at Colby on Tuesday.
GAME ONE –Husson 5, Colby-Sawyer 4
Colby-Sawyer scored a run in the first on an RBI single from junior
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.).
The Chargers doubled the lead in the third with ab RBI single to center from sophomore
Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) scoring Frongillo.
The home team would add one more in the fourth off the bat from sophomore
Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.). He singled in
Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine) who reached on a single, was bunted over and came around on the hit.
Held to just three hits in the first six innings, Husson rallied in the seventh with four hits and benefited from three Colby-Sawyer errors. Four different Eagles had RBIs in the inning with freshman Mike Wong (Lewiston, Maine), senior Julien Boone (Washington, D.C.) and junior Ryan Rebar (Harmony, Maine) each getting a run-scoring knock.
Colby-Sawyer got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice but left two men on to end the game.
Junior Ben Walls (Bar Harbor, Maine) got the win for the Eagles after pitching 6+ innings with one earned run. Senior
Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) took the tough complete game loss with no earned runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
Frongillo led all players with three hits, while Avellino added a pair.
Freshman Sam Huston (Bangor, Maine) had a team-high two hits for Husson.
Each team finished with five errors in the game.
GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 15, Husson 0
The Chargers put the first game behind them and erupted for 15 runs on 17 hits to take game two.
Colby-Sawyer opened the game with four runs after junior
Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.),
Doug Avellino and
Nathan Frongillo began the first inning with three straight singles.
Connor Henry knocked in a pair of runs with a single to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman
Liam Datres de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.).
The home team got three more hits in the second inning as Henry recorded another RBI hit scoring Frongillo.
The offense kept coming in the third with four more runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch from Frongillo then a bases clearing double to deep center field from senior
Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.).
The Chargers would score four runs for the third time in the game in the fifth inning on RBI hits from Frongillo, sophomore
Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) and sophomore
Drew Inglesi (Franklin, Mass.).
Jeff Dunn put across the Chargers' 14th run with his fourth hit of the game in the sixth inning and another run would score on a double play to give Colby-Sawyer the 15-0 lead.
Sophomore
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) went the first five innings and gave up just two hits to earn his third win of the season. Senior
Mike Peters (Melrose, Mass.) pitched two perfect innings of relief to complete the combined two-hitter.
Dunn finished game two 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Henry was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Avellino scored four times and had three hits in four at-bats. Frongillo went 3-for-3 and was hit twice to reach base in all five plate appearances. He scored four runs and knocked in three. Frongillo finished the day 6-for-7 with five runs and four RBI to push his average to .373.
