Baseball Splits with Husson

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 16, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with the Husson University Eagles on Saturday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer walked off with a 4-3 win in game one and Husson took game two 10-0.

Colby-Sawyer goes to 9-13 overall and 6-8 in the NAC. Husson goes to 14-11 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The two teams will play another twin bill tomorrow at Colby-Sawyer beginning at 11 a.m.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 4, Husson 3

Colby-Sawyer senior Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) put the Chargers in front with a sacrifice fly that scored Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) in the bottom of the first.

The Chargers pushed the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third on an RBI single from Avellino and another sacrifice fly from Dunn.

The next three innings featured just one hit sending the game to the seventh in favor of Colby-Sawyer 3-0.

After the first two Eagles reached in the seventh via a base on balls, the Chargers were able to get the first out on an infield fly. The next Husson hitter was also walked to load the bases. Two runs came around off the bat of senior Andrew Curran (Hampstead, N.H.) who reached on an error. Freshman Mike Wong (Lewiston, Maine) then knocked in the tying run on a fielder's choice. Wong was then caught stealing to end the inning.

Colby-Sawyer pitcher Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side. He was then sacrificed to second by sophomore Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine). Sophomore Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) then stepped to the plate and hit a sharp ground to short that took a high bounce off the edge of the grass and went over the head of the shortstop to score Henry for the 4-3 walk-off win.

In addition to scoring to game-winning run, pitcher Henry tossed a complete game giving up one earned run on four hits to improve to 3-1.

Husson hurler Brandon Reilly (Pemaquid, Maine) also went the distance and gave up two earned runs in 6.1 with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Husson 10, Colby-Sawyer 0

Husson opened the game with four runs in the top of the first with the big hit coming from freshman Sam Houston (Bangor, Maine). He knocked in a pair of runs on his lone hit of the game.

The Eagles added single runs in the second, third and fifth and then tacked on three more in the sixth for the 10-0 victory.

Junior Ryan Rebar (Harmony, Maine) had three hits for the Eagles. Senior Zach Sugar (Canton, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while senior Julien Boone (Washington, D.C.) added two hits and two runs. Junior Cam Archer (Old Town, Maine) was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Senior Dan Whitney (Bethel, Maine) allowed 10 Colby-Sawyer hits in six innings, but did not allow any runs to secure his third victory of the season. Junior Ben Holmes (Dixfield, Maine) threw a perfect seventh with two strikeouts to close the game.

Colby-Sawyer's Bobby Madden (Malden, Mass.) took the loss after four innings of work. Sophomore Andrew Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) gave up one hit and struck out two in an inning of relief.

Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) and Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) had two hits apiece for the Chargers. Shawn McCarthy (N. Waterboro, Maine) and Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.) each had pinch hits.
