Baseball Drops Two to Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - April 14, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games at Castleton University on Thursday afternoon. 

The Spartans won by scores of 15-2 and 15-3 to improve to 16-9 overall and 10-2 in the conference. Colby-Sawyer dips to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Husson for four games over the weekend with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. 

GAME ONE – Castleton 15, Colby-Sawyer 2

Deagan Poland started the scoring in the home half of the first scoring on a wild pitch. Poland then had a bases-clearing double in the second to put the hosts in front 4-0. Taylor Vile followed with an RBI single to center before coming home later in the frame for a 5-0 lead. 

The Spartans tacked on three more in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Pat Mumford, Vile and Dan Errico before adding six runs in the sixth. The big hit in the sixth came off the bat of Nick Swim. He connected for a grand slam over the left field fence for his second home run of the year.

The Chargers put a pair of runs across in the top of the seventh on RBI ground outs from Jackson Musco and Doug Avellino.

Swim went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and two runs scored. Poland delivered three hits with three RBIs, while Vile went 2-for-2 with two RBIs of his own. 

Nathan Frongillo finished with two hits to lead Colby-Sawyer.  

Devin Hayes notched his second win of the year after seven strong innings with two runs from five hits and three strikeouts. Michael Fazio suffered the loss after giving up nine runs (three earned) in four innings of work.
 
GAME TWO – Castleton 15, Colby-Sawyer 3

Swim began the scoring in the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first before swiping home later in the frame to hand the hosts a two-run lead. Two innings later, Caron brought home the third run of the game with a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0. 

The Chargers tied the contest with a three runs in the top of the third on a run-scoring double from Nathan Frongillo and a two-run single from Brendan Thurber.

Castleton created separation with nine runs in the fifth and added three more runs in the sixth to secure the victory. 

Swim had another solid game at the dish for Castleton going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Caron went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks.

Colby-Sawyer's Tim Donovan had a team best two hits in three at bats. 

Charles Stapleford picked up his fourth win of the year with six innings of three-run baseball. Matt Daly took a no-decision after tossing 3.2 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed, while Mike Peters took the loss.
