NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 13, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team dropped both ends of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to Castleton University on Wednesday afternoon. Castleton came from behind to win game one 10-7 in nine innings and took game two 9-0.
Castleton improves to 14-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference, while the Chargers drop to 8-10 overall and 5-5 in the NAC. The two teams will play another twin bill tomorrow at Castleton. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
GAME ONE – Castleton 10, Colby-Sawyer 7 – 9 inn.
Senior Nick Swim (St. Albans, Vt.) knocked in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring freshman Deagan Poland (Williston, Vt.) who reached on an error and moved up to third on a sac bunt and an error.
The Chargers quickly erased the deficit with four runs in their first at-bat. Junior
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) had an RBI single, while sophomore
Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine) knocked in a run on a fielder's choice. Sophomore
Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) then had the big hit with a two-run double down the left field line.
Colby-Sawyer tacked on three more runs to push its advantage to 7-1 in the fourth. Frongillo got his second RBI single and was followed by a two-run double to the left center gap by senior
Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.).
Castleton began to chip away in the sixth inning, scoring twice. Junior Zach Bahan (Shaftsbury, Vt.) led off the inning with a solo homerun over the left field fence. The second run came across on a sacrifice fly from junior Nick Patierne (Schenectady, N.Y.).
The visitors completed the comeback in the top of the seventh with four runs on four hits. The game-tying run was scored via a balk as junior Jim Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) was awarded home plate.
Colby-Sawyer began to threaten in the bottom of the seventh but was thwarted by a diving catch by Dillon Benham (Lenox, Mass.) in right field and was able to double the runner off of first.
The Spartans put three runs across in the top of the ninth on a pair of RBI singles by Buckley and Benham and Patierne's second sacrifice fly of the game.
Castleton was led by a three-hit effort from Swim. Poland and Buckley added two hits apiece.
Frongillo finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Chargers. Thurber had a pair of hits and two RBI. Junior
Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) scored twice.
Junior Michael LaBeau (Bellows Falls, Vt.) got the win after 1.2 innings of hitless relief. Sophomore Aaron Smith (Middlebury, Vt.) threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief also for Castleton. Colby-Sawyer's
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) was saddled with the loss after two innings of work.
GAME TWO – Castleton 9, Colby-Sawyer 0
Nick Swim put the Spartans in front for the second straight game with an RBI double in the top of the first.
The Spartans added three runs in the second. Deagan Poland had an RBI single in the frame.
Castleton added two runs in the fifth and sixth and a single run in the seventh to secure the 9-0 victory.
Swim finished with three hits and three RBI.
Castleton junior pitcher Luke Salerno (Essex Jct, Vt.) tossed a complete game two-hitter to improve to 3-0 on the season. Colby-Sawyer senior
Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) suffered his first loss of the season in five innings of work. He gave up six runs (four earned) and struck out three.
