Lasell Takes Two From Baseball

WALTHAM, Mass. - March 26, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a pair of close games against Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University. Lasell won game one 4-1 and took game two 3-2 in eight innings. 

Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 6-6, while Lasell also goes to .500 at 7-7. The Chargers will remain on the road next week with games at Elms and Nichols. 
 
Game One - Lasell 4, Colby-Sawyer 1
 
In the first inning, the Chargers earned the first run of the day with a single up the middle by senior Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.). The Lasers were able to tie it up in the bottom of the inning when Beckerman worked a bases juiced walk to force home a run. After the first inning, both starting pitchers settled in for the day. Junior Casey Johnson (Windsor, Conn.) struck out six batters over six innings and Chargers' starter Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.) also struck out six and allowed just two hits over four and a third innings.
 
Freshmen Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) got the Lasers' bats going in the bottom of the fifth, and Sherron drove in two runs on a single back up the middle to break the tie.
 
In the top of the seventh, junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) finished the game on the hill with three straight fly outs to earn his second save of the season.

Lasell freshman Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) drove in a pair of RBI's in the victory.
 
For the Chargers, sophomore Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) batted 2-for-3 with a run batted in to go along with the lone double of the game.

Colby-Sawyer out-hit the Lasers 6-5. 
 
Game Two - Lasell 3, Colby-Sawyer 2 (8 innings)
 
Coscione put the home team on the board in the third with a solo home run. 
 
In the fourth inning, junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) began a two out rally with a double and came around on an error push the Lasers' lead to 2-0.

The Chargers knotted the game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Devoid scored on an error and Tim Donovan recorded an RBI bunt with the bases loaded. 

In the bottom of the eighth, senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) led the inning off with a single before he was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Gagnon got the walk-off hit to drive in Flaherty from second.

Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) and Jeff Dunn had two hits apiece for the Chargers, while Tim Donovan was credited with the lone RBI.
 
Lasell's starting pitcher, senior Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) threw six innings allowing one run with five strikeouts. Junior Dan Berger (Meriden Conn.) pitched the eighth inning to get the win. 

Sophomore Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) pitched three and two third innings and gave up two runs. Mike Bowse went 2.1 of relief giving up one hit, while Michael Fazio was saddled with the loss surrendering one run in 1.2 innings.
