Baseball Drops Game One to Thomas; Walks Off in Game Two

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 9, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College and Thomas College baseball teams split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on a cool and breezy Saturday afternoon. Thomas earned a come from behind 6-2 win in game one, while the Chargers came back to win the second game in eight innings, 3-2.   

Colby-Sawyer goes to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the NAC, while Thomas goes to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at noon.

GAME ONE – Thomas 6, Colby-Sawyer 2

Each starting pitcher held the opposing team off the scoreboard for the first five and a half innings. The Chargers finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle by junior Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.).

Thomas then put across six runs in the top of the seventh with the big hit coming from senior Matt Romandetti (Palm Bay, Fla.). Romandetti pinched hit with the bases loaded and ripped a ball down the right field line to plate a pair. Senior Nik Beeson (Manchester, N.H.) also had a two-run hit in the inning to put the Terriers up 6-1.

Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Liam Datres de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.), but closer Dominic Esposito (Portland, Maine) got a pop-up to end the game.

Senior Isiah Fleming (Fairfield, Maine) got the win for Thomas going 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run. Esposito earned his fourth save of the season. Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.) took the loss after 6.1 innings with four hits.

GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 3, Thomas 2 (8 inn.)

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Thomas broke through for a pair of runs. Senior Derek Kane (Natick, Mass.) singled home senior Anree Benitez (Orlando, Fla.) who reached on a double. Kane then came around on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Alex Curtis (Monmouth, Maine).

Colby-Sawyer quickly knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) scored after sophomore Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Later in the inning, sophomore Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) executed a suicide squeeze to score senior Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.).

After neither team could put the go ahead run on the board in the sixth or the seventh, Colby-Sawyer would end the game in the bottom of the eighth. Jackson Musco scored the game-winner on a walk-off hit from junior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.).

Senior Mike Bowse (Merrimack, Mass.) went the first seven for the Chargers and gave up two runs, struck out two and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season after a perfect eighth inning.

Sophomore Matt Rutherford (Saco, Maine) was saddled with the loss after tossing 7.1 innings. He gave up two hits and one earned run.
