Women's Lacrosse Wins Home Opener over Becker, 11-6

NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 23, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team downed Becker College, 11-6 in Wednesday's home opener at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field.

The Chargers improve to 1-4 and will travel to Husson on Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener. Becker drops to 1-6 and will play at Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Chargers received a team best four goals from senior Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, N.H.), while sophomore Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) added three tallies. Sophomore Bailey Starr (Barre, Vt.), senior Sara Berry (Bowdoinham, Maine), sophomore Carli Chiodo (Madbury, N.H.), and freshman Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) had one goal apiece. Starr added two assists and four draw controls.

Becker was led by team leading goal scorer Victoria Belcher (Seekonk, Mass.). She scored three goals and added four ground balls and three draw controls. Junior Erika Galdamex (Concord, Calif.) scored twice, while senior Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, N.Y.) accounted for the sixth Hawks goal.

Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the game before Becker responded with a goal at 21:20 to cut the lead in half. The Chargers then scored three unanswered to take a 5-1 lead with less than a minute to play. Each team would score in the final 38 seconds and Colby-Sawyer took a 6-2 lead into the break.

Caitlyn Whearty gave the home team a 7-2 lead 58 seconds into the second half. Two straight goals from Nicole Lavigne over the next three minutes pushed the Colby-Sawyer advantage to 9-2. The Hawks chipped away as they scored four of the next five goals to make it 10-6, but there was only 4:51 on the clock. After the next four minutes went scoreless, Colby-Sawyer's Whearty capped off the win with her fourth goal of the game in the final minute of action to give the Chargers to an 11-6 win.  

Junior Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) made six saves in the win for the Chargers. Becker freshman goalie Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine) had 11 stops.
