AUBURNDALE, Fla. - March 17, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader with the Mass. College of Liberal Arts on Thursday at the Lake Myrtle complex.
The Chargers won the first game 12-4 and came from behind to win the second game 9-8. Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-2 and will conclude its spring break trip on Friday with two games against Springfield College beginning at 10:30 a.m. MCLA drops to 2-6.
GAME ONE - Colby-Sawyer 12, MCLA 4Colby-Sawyer scored in each of the first five innings, highlighted by three runs in the fifth, and collected ten stolen bases on the afternoon. MCLA got on the board in the third with a pair of runs.
The Chargers added some insurance in the seventh with four more runs before MCLA closed the game with two of their own to make it a 12-4 final.
Chris Mitchell earned the win for Colby-Sawyer going five innings and allowing both unearned runs. He allowed 8 hits and struck out three. Austin Butler, Doug Avellino, Jackson Musco, and Drew Inglesi each had two hits for Colby Sawyer. Avellino drove in three runs, while Musco had three stolen bases.Todd Hunt took the loss for MCLA throwing the first four innings and giving up 8 hits and 5 runs, all earned. He walked four and struck out four. Pulasky was a perfect 4-4 on the afternoon to lead the offense. Nate Gutmann and Shook also had three hits.
Each team had 15 hits in the game.
GAME TWO - Colby-Sawyer 9, MCLA 8Colby-Sawyer came back from an 8-2 deficit to earn the twin bill sweep.
MCLA led 8-2 after three and a half innings. The Chargers scored twice in the fourth and plated four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 8-8. They would score the game-winner in the sixth inning using small ball and a Trailblazer miscue to score the winning run.
Brendan Thurber started the inning getting hit by a pitch. The next batter bunted him over and the pinch runner
Shawn McCarthy rounded second and headed for third. MCLA threw across the diamond to get him, however the ball sailed high and McCarthy scored easily for the 9-8 win.
Colby-Sawyer scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0. The game would stay that way until the third inning when MCLA would send nine batters to the plate and score five runs to take the lead. Nate Alibozek drove in a run with a single to center field, but received a three-run triple from Robert Jutras to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Trailblazers. MCLA would extend the lead with two more runs in the fourth on an Alibozek RBI double and a Ryan Shook sacrifice fly.
The Chargers however answered in the bottom of the inning scoring two of their own.
MCLA would add another run on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning to extend to an 8-4 lead.
Colby-Sawyer would tie things up in the home half when the first five batters reached base. A walk brought in a run and two straight RBI groundouts tied the game at 8-8 heading to the sixth.
Ryan Glendye got his first collegiate win after throwing two scoreless innings with one hit and three strikeouts.
Avellino, Devoid, Musco and Frongillo each had two hits.
