AUBURNDALE, Fla. - March 13, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team took both ends of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader over New England College on the second day of a spring break trip to Florida.
The Chargers improve to 3-1 overall and in the NAC, while New England College drops to 1-3. Colby-Sawyer will play a single nine-inning game on Monday at 9:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla. against Indiana University South Bend.
GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 5, New England College 2Colby-Sawyer struck for a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from
Drew Inglesi. The Chargers scored three more times in the third and never looked back.
New England College cut into the lead with a run in the fourth and fifth, but Colby-Sawyer added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a
Andrew Pratt RBI single to left field.
Tim Donovan led Colby-Sawyer with a pair of hits, while six other Chargers had one hit apiece.
Connor Henry earned the win for Colby-Sawyer after 4.2 innings of work with two earned runs.
Michael Fazio picked up his second save in as many days with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Jeam Deleon took the loss for the Pilgrims with a complete game.
Myles Comeau and Connor Crouse each had two hits for New England College.
GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 4, New England College 2Each team scored a run in the third inning.
Doug Avellino had a RBI double down the left field line for the Chargers.
After a scoreless fourth, Colby-Sawyer added a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth on another RBI hit from Avellino.
New England College got a run back in the top of the seventh on a RBI single to center from Zachary Carrano. The Chargers got out of a jam as the Pilgrims stranded a pair of baserunners with a lineout to first to end the game.
Jake Greaney got credit for the win for Colby-Sawyer. He threw three innings of relief and allowed one unearned run.
Bobby Madden pitched an efficient first four innings surrendering just one run while striking out four.
Avellino finished with a team best two hits and two RBI.
Manuel Alejandro pitched well in his collegiate debut for New England College striking out five in 5.2 innings.
Vincent Backert and Zachary Carrano each went 2-for-4 for NEC.
