Strong First Half Propels Women's Basketball to 70-61 Win over UMF

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 12, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team held a 45-30 lead at the half and never looked back in Friday's 70-61 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over the UMaine Farmington.

Both teams even their overall records at 11-11, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-8 in the conference and UMaine-Farmington drops to 9-6. The Chargers will host Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m., while UMF travels to New England College also for a 1 p.m. tip tomorrow.  

Colby-Sawyer was led by sophomore Amanda Calvo's (South Deerfield, Mass.) 16 points. Senior Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) added 14 points off the bench. Shenkel made four three-pointers to move into fourth on the career makes list with 161 and is one shy of third place. Sophomore Morgan Fogg (Sanford, Maine) was the third Charger in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-8. Junior Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) collected seven points and game-highs of 11 rebounds and six assists.

Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) led UMF and all players with 25 points on 11-of-20 shooting. Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jenessa Talarico (Lewiston, Maine) added 13 points for the Beavers on 3-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and made all four free throw attempts.

UMF led by five mid-way through the first quarter 13-8 after a Grover layup, but Colby-Sawyer finished the frame on a 14-4 run to lead 22-17 and never look back. The Chargers made four three-pointers, while UMF did damage in the paint outscoring Colby-Sawyer 8-0.

The home team slowly increased its advantage in the second which eventually ballooned to 15 after an Amanda Calvo trey with 1:24 to play in the half. Jenessa Talarico responded with a three of her own seconds later, but Jessica Shenkel gave the Chargers the 15 point lead (45-30) at the break with her third three of the half.

Each team scored 16 points in the third quarter to keep the game at a 15-point lead for the Chargers 61-46.

The Beavers cut the deficit to eight after another three-pointer from Talarico with 5:46 to play, but the Chargers did not allow the game to get any closer and held on for the nine point win, 70-61.
