Women's Basketball Falls at Middlebury, 65-44

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – December 6, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at Middlebury, 65-44 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

Middlebury, which is coached by 2014 Colby-Sawyer Athletic Hall of Fame inductee KJ Krasco '05, improves to 4-1 and will have a quick turnaround with a home game against Clarkson tomorrow night at 6 p.m. The Chargers have their four game win streak snapped and fall to 5-2. The Chargers will return home for a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games this weekend beginning on Friday night against Husson, before an afternoon game with Maine Maritime on Saturday.

Freshman Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led Colby-Sawyer with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior Ally Mignault (Billerica, Mass.) finished with eight points and four rebounds, while senior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) had six points and six boards.

Middlebury was led by sophomore Colleen Caveney (Andover, Mass.). She scored a game best 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Freshman Betsy Knox (Bethesda, Md.) added 17 points and eight boards. Junior Rachel Collins (Bedford, N.H.) contributed 10 points off the bench. Sophomore Catherine Harrison (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with eight points and eight caroms.

The Chargers began the game with a 5-2 run in the first 1:31 after an Ally Mignault (Billerica, Mass.) and an Iannone trey. Middlebury then scored the next nine points to take an 11-5 lead mid-way through the first. Each team exchanged two points before Sugars made a layup and one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 13-10. Junior Sarah Kaufman (Boulder, Colo.) ended the first with a 10-foot buzzer-beater to give the Panthers a 15-10 lead.

Mignault scored the first bucket of the second, but Middlebury went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-12 lead forcing a timeout with 6:18 to play. The home team then found the range from beyond the arc to increase its advantage to 27-14 with less than three minutes to play. The Chargers scored the game's next three points, but Middlebury converted three straight layups to take a 33-17 advantage in the waning moments. Sugars made a lay-in with seven seconds left to end the first half with the Chargers trailing 33-19.

Colby-Sawyer received its first bucket from Mignault for the third straight quarter. Iannone then hit her second trey of the game to pull the Chargers within nine, but Middlebury responded with seven straight points to push its lead to 16. The Panthers edged the Chargers in a high scoring third 19-16 to take a 52-35 lead heading into the final quarter.

Middlebury outscored the Chargers 13-9 in the fourth to take the non-conference victory by a score of 65-44.
