Women's Basketball Ends 2016 with 64-60 Win Over Manhattanville

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 31, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team finished 2016 with a 64-60 victory over Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon.    

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-3 and will begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday with a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game at Johnson State at 7:30 p.m. Manhattanville of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) drops to 4-5 and will host non-conference foe Western Connecticut State on Monday at 2 p.m.
 
The Chargers held a 60-58 lead with 1:08 left to play when Manhattanville sophomore Ivy Coles (Freeport, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game. After turnovers by each team, Colby-Sawyer regained possession and called a timeout with 30 seconds left to set up a play. Junior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) dribbled inside the arc towards to baseline and hit a 10-foot jumper to give the Chargers a 62-60 lead with 10 seconds to go. Manhattanville had a chance to tie on the ensuing possession but could not connect on a layup. Freshman Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) then knocked down both free throws to salt the game away for the Chargers, 64-60.
 
Ellis finished with 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Colby-Sawyer. Senior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) also scored 12 points, while Calvo collected 10. Freshman Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) was the fourth Charger in double figures with 10 points to go along with five rebounds and four blocks. Hamilton had a game best seven assists, while junior Morgan Fogg (Sanford, Maine) had six in 14 minutes off the bench.
 
The Valiants were led by a game-high 17 points from sophomore Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y.). She also grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 13 points. She added nine rebounds and four assists. Coles finished with nine points and a game best three steals.
 
Manhattanville held a 51-39 advantage on the glass, while Colby-Sawyer outscored the Valiants 30-22 in the paint.
