Colby-Sawyer Uses Strong Third Quarter to Defeat Suffolk, 75-57

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 22, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team defeated Suffolk University, 75-57, on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers improve to 2-1 and will resume action on Tuesday, November 29 at Plymouth State before opening North Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, November 30 at Green Mountain. Suffolk events its record at 2-2 and will return to the court on Monday at Wentworth.

Colby-Sawyer was led by a 20-point effort from senior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.). She went 6-for-9 from the floor and made all six free throw attempts. Freshman Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) filled the stat sheet with 18 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Freshman Chelsea Dow (White River Junction, Vt.) was the third Charger in double figures with 11 points to go along with five assists.

Suffolk was led by senior Alexandra Clarke (Boothbay Harbor, Maine). She was 8-of-11 from the floor to finish with 18 points. She added seven rebounds. Senior Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) scored seven and pulled down seven boards. Junior Caitlyn Caramello (Revere, Mass.) chipped in nine points and six caroms off the bench.

The Rams got off to a nice start in the first quarter, beginning the game on a 7-2 run capped by a Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) layup. Colby-Sawyer took a 9-8 lead on a jumper from junior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) and extended the advantage to 13-8 after a pair of Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) free throws and an Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) lay-in. Suffolk was able to finish the frame the way it started and took an 18-16 lead into the first break after a 6-1 run.

Suffolk held a lead for the first seven minutes of the second quarter before four straight points from Colby-Sawyer put the home team in front 31-29. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch and a Sugars layup with 34 seconds to play gave Colby-Sawyer a 35-34 lead at the half.

Colby-Sawyer turned up the offense in the third quarter and eventually led by 18 with 2:35 to play in the frame. The Chargers scored 14 straight points and held Suffolk scoreless for the first six minutes. The Chargers outscored Suffolk 27-12 in the quarter and led 62-46 after three.

Colby-Sawyer continued to apply pressure early in the fourth and extended its lead to 22 and secured the victory with a final score of 75-57.

The Chargers were 21-of-29 from the free throw line for the game.
