Perfect Ending to Regular Season for Women's Tennis

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 2, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team completed its fifth straight perfect North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division regular season after Sunday's 9-0 win over Thomas College.

The Chargers have won all 34 conference matches over the past five seasons and will enter next weekend's NEAC East Division tournament as the top seed. Colby-Sawyer went 7-0 in conference matches this season with all wins coming via a 9-0 score. The Chargers improve to 10-1 overall after winning nine straight matches. Thomas ends its season with an overall record of 3-8 and a conference mark of 2-5.

Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) won at the top doubles flight 8-2 over Lindsey Allen and Olivia Mora. Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) also won by an 8-2 score at No. 2 over Amelia Guimond and Mia Navarro. Michelle Lopes (West Hartford, Conn.) and Hilary Boucher (Presque Isle, Maine) did not drop a game en route to winning third doubles 8-0 over Sarah Vigue and Olita Laraway.

The Chargers then swept singles play receiving wins from six players that did not compete in doubles action.

Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) topped Allen 6-0, 6-1 at the top flight, while Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot to secure the victory.

Ari Sullivan (Salem, N.H.) came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Guimond in No. 3 singles play.

The final three matches were played to an eight game pro set.  

In the closest match of the afternoon, Colby-Sawyer's Abbie Rix (Westfield, Mass.) outlasted Mia Navarro 9-8 (7-4) at fourth singles.  

Marissa Ulmer (Windham, Maine) and Julia Varney (Readfield, Maine) won their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches 8-0 and 8-1, respectively.

Tournament seedings and pairings will be released on Monday. The semifinals will take part Saturday morning and will be followed by the championship match later in the afternoon. All matches will be hosted by Castleton.
