CASTLETON, Vt. - October 15, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team had a successful trip to Vermont on Saturday and picked up a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victories. The Chargers defeated Castleton 3-1 and followed with a 3-0 win over Green Mountain.
The Chargers are now 7-18 overall and 4-1 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer will travel to Southern Maine and Suffolk next week before hosting UMPI and Husson on Saturday.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Castleton 1 - 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-11
Colby-Sawyer scored the first four points of the match, three of them on service aces by
Micaela Cardozo, before back-to-back kills by Olivia Perkins started a 10-1 scoring run for the Spartans. After the two teams exchanged points through the majority of the first set, the Chargers pulled to within one on a block by
Jaia Woodland and
Naarah Cox, but Castleton responded with three straight points, closing out the first set on a kill by Perkins.
The Chargers opened an 8-2 lead early in the second set, and then scored six unanswered points later on, including another block by Woodland and Cox, to extend their lead into double figures. Colby-Sawyer would finish the second set on a kill by Cox and a service ace from
Olivia Goodrich, tying the match at one set apiece.
Down 6-3 in the third set after consecutive kills by
Courtney Murray, Castleton rattled off six unanswered points to pull ahead, 9-6. Colby-Sawyer answered right back with an 11-2 scoring run, capped by two kills from Woodland sandwiched around two service aces by
Ashley Kinley. After Cassidy Tedeschi earned a kill and a solo block to close the Spartan deficit to 21-18, the Chargers scored the final four points of the third set, featuring two kills by Cardozo and a service ace from
Nicole Olivieri.
In the fourth set, Colby-Sawyer started by scoring seven of the first nine points, and then opened a 15-point advantage thanks to an 11-1 scoring run, led by Cox with four kills and Olivieri with three aces. Cardozo would close out the set and the match with a kill.
Tedeschi led the Spartans with eight kills, 11 digs, and four total blocks, while Kimberly Jackson finished with six kills, two service aces, and 10 digs.
For the Chargers, Cox earned 11 kills, a .421 hitting percentage, and five total blocks, Goodrich dished out 43 assists, and Kinley collected four aces and 18 digs.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Green Mountain 0 - 25-13, 25-7, 25-17
The Chargers made it a 2-0 day by hitting .291 and holding Green Mountain to -.357.
Shari Juranovits led Colby-Sawyer with six kills on .300 hitting.
Naarah Cox added four kills, while
Elyssa Clairmont chipped in three kills, 11 assists and a match-high eight service aces.
Green Mountain was led by Taylor Hill's two kills. Madison Gillen had a match best 11 digs.
