NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 29, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team was defeated by Maine Maritime Academy, 58-53 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday evening.
Maine Maritime improves to 10-7 overall and 6-4 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer drops to 10-7 overall and 7-4 in the conference. The teams have now split two regular season meetings with each side winning on the road. The Chargers earned a 51-47 win in Castine, Maine in December. Both teams will have a quick turnaround with 1 p.m. games on Saturday. The Chargers will host Husson, while the Mariners travel to New England College.
The first quarter featured great shooting by both teams. Maine Maritime shot 43.8 percent, while Colby-Sawyer shot 44.4 percent. The Chargers led 12-5 keyed by a pair of treys from junior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.). The Mariners responded by scoring the next 15 points to take a 20-12 advantage. Junior Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) scored five points in the run. Colby-Sawyer was able to close the gap with a three from
Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) to end the quarter down 23-20.
The second quarter was low scoring as both teams struggled from the floor and only combined for six made field goals. The Mariners took a 32-28 lead into the break.
Each team scored 12 points in the third quarter to keep the game a four-point advantage for the visitors. Mariners' leading scorer Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored 10 of the teams' points in the quarter. Trailing by 10 with less than 1:30 in the frame, Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Alex Danas (Middletown, Conn.) hit two three-pointers to pull the Chargers within four to end the quarter.
Colby-Sawyer tied the game at the 4:32 mark in the four quarter after four straight points from Iannone. Freshman Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) put the Mariners on top 56-52 with a three-pointer from the right corner with just 47 seconds to play. The Chargers made a free throw to, but the Mariners made two of their own down the stretch to hang on for a 58-53 victory.
Felix led all scorers with 23 points for the Mariners. McLean was the second Mariner in double figures with 15 points. Junior Krisi Willey (Topsham, Maine) had five points, three assists and a game best 10 rebounds.
Colby-Sawyer was led by Iannone's 13 points. She added a career-high nine rebounds. Sophomore
Morgan Fogg (Sanford, Maine) had nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Danas finished with eight points in 18 minutes of action.
The Chargers held a big advantage on the boards (57-40) but Maine Maritime turned 20 Colby-Sawyer miscues into 15 points.
