NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 30, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Husson University, 77-54 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Husson remains atop the NAC standings with an 11-1 record and goes to 13-5 overall. The Eagles will return home for a pair of games next weekend against Lyndon and Johnson State. Colby-Sawyer dips to 10-8 overall and 7-5 in the NAC. The Chargers will begin a three game road trip on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip at Castleton.
The first quarter was back and forth for the first five minutes before Husson opened a 19-10 lead with 1:22 remaining. The Chargers scored the final six points of the frame on four free throws and a layup to trail 19-16.
Husson turned up the defensive pressure in the second and forced 11 Charger turnovers, which resulted in 16 points. A three-point play from Colby-Sawyer junior
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) pulled the Chargers within eight with 2:37 left, but Husson ended the quarter on a 9-0 run capped by a Darla Morales (Oxnard, Calif.) trey to take a 43-26 lead at halftime.
The visitors opened the third quarter on a 13-5 run, which included eight points from Rebecca Young (Concord, Vt.), to take a 56-31 lead. The Chargers chipped away over the final five minutes and scored the next seven points including a
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) jumper to end the frame, 56-38.
Colby-Sawyer continued to cut into the deficit and came within 12 (59-47) after four straight made free throws from Ellis with 7:24 left to play. Husson would increase its advantage over the next few minutes thanks to an 8-0 run and end the game with the 77-54 victory.
Rebecca Young led the Eagles and all players with 24 points on 12-of-21 shooting. Husson's season leading scorer Kenzie Worcester (Washburn, Maine) finished with 15 points, six assists and four steals.
Colby-Sawyer was led by
Lexi Iannone's 19 points. She added three blocks and two steals.
Kristin Ellis just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Junior
Ally Mignault (Billerica, Mass.) had three assists and a career-high three blocks in 15 minutes of action.
Colby-Sawyer went 15-of-15 from the free throw line to set a new program record for field goal percentage in a game.
