Women's Basketball Uses Strong Fourth Quarter to Secure 60-42 Win at Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine - January 22, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team broke a 39-39 tie after three quarters by outscoring Thomas College 21-3 in the fourth to secure a 60-42 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Friday night.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the NAC. The Chargers will stay in Maine and play at UMaine-Farmington on Saturday at 1 p.m. Thomas drops to 2-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference. The Terriers will host New England College tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Thomas led 15-14 after one quarter, but Colby-Sawyer opened the second stanza on a 7-0 run capped by a Jessica Shenkel three-pointer to lead 21-15 with 5:55 to play in the half.

Katie McAllister (Pittston, Maine) responded with a jumper and Jordan Agger-Barnes (South Portland, Maine) added a free throw to cut the lead to three. A Kristin Ellis layup at the 4:30 mark provided the last points in the half for the Chargers, but the Terriers could only muster three points to trail 23-21 at the break.

Just as they had in the second quarter, the Chargers opened the third quarter on a run capped by a Shenkel trey, taking a 29-21 lead before the Terriers could respond with a run of their own.

Thomas scored nine straight points over a three-minute stretch to storm back and take a 30-29 lead on a jumper by Ashleigh Gagne (Waterville, Maine). The teams traded baskets with Gagne hitting another jumper with 1:15 to play in the third to tie the game at 39-39.

Early on in the fourth quarter, it appeared as if the back-and-forth nature of the first three quarters would persist. A McAllister free throw cut the Colby-Sawyer lead to 45-42 with 8:05 to play after which Thomas went ice cold from the field, missing their final seven shots as the Chargers wrested away control and ended the game on a 15-0 run.

The Chargers, who shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the field in the fourth quarter, were led by 18 points from Shenkel on 6-of-12 shooting. She also drained five three-pointers, had five rebounds and blocked four shots. Morgan Fogg added 10, while Lexi Iannone had nine. Ellis had eight points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds. Katie McCarthy collected four assists to give her 251 career helpers. She now ranks 10th in program history.

Gagne finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and had eight rebounds but committed 10 turnovers. McAllister added 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Agger-Barnes had seven points and Tess McClenahan (Salmon, Idaho) had five points, four assists and three rebounds.
