WESTFIELD, Mass. – January 2, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped a 50-48 overtime decision to Wellesley in the opening round of the Westfield State Holiday Tournament on Saturday afternoon in the Woodward Center.
Chelsi Scott (Portland, Mich.) sunk a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining in the extra frame to break the ninth tie of the night to give Wellesley the win. Scott paced the Blue with game-highs in points (17), rebounds (15) and steals (3).
Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif.) drained a three pointer, her third of the game, on Wellesley's opening possession of overtime. Two stops on the defensive end allowed a Ailis Hanley (Cranston, R.I.) bucket to extend the lead to five with 2:40 remaining, the largest margin for either side since halfway through the first quarter.
With 1:26 remaining, Colby-Sawyer's
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) hit a jumper, the Chargers' defense caused a turnover on the inbounds and
Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) cashed in on the opportunity with a three to tie the game with 1:05 on the clock.
Hanley finished with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) for the Blue. Ellis had nine points and eight boards for the Chargers, while
Emmani Robinson grabbed a team best 10 caroms.
Colby-Sawyer's
Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a long field goal with her foot on the arc with 28 seconds left in regulation to knot the score and send the game to the extra session.
Wellesley held a 54-39 edge on Colby-Sawyer in rebounds.
Wellesley improves to 3-6 and will meet Westfield State in the championship game tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer slips to 5-4 and will play University of Saint Joseph in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
