Chargers Rebound with 61-46 Win over the Blue Jays

WESTFIELD, Mass. –  January 3, 2016 - Junior forward Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) scored 11 points and grabbed a game high 17 rebounds to lead the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a a 61-46 win over the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) in the consolation game of the Westfield State Holiday Tournament on Sunday at the Woodward Center.
 
Colby-Sawyer led 14-6 after the first quarter, and 34-17 at the half behind eight points from Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.). The Chargers used a height advantage to dominate play in the paint with 20 of their 34 points coming inside the lane, and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the half.
 
Colby-Sawyer maintained its advantage throughout the second half, leading by as many as 23 points early in the fourth quarter.
 
Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) was the only other player in double-figures for the Chargers with 10 points and nine rebounds. Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) handed out a career best 10 assists. Ellis came away with her second 17-rebound effort of the season and fourth of her career. The Chargers finished with 10 blocks, reaching double figures for the third time this season. 
 
The Blue Jays were led by a game-high 18 points from senior guard Stephanie DeJesus (Meriden, Conn.). Sophomore guard Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Forward Kayla Guest chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds in just 17 minutes of play before fouling out.
 
St. Joseph falls to 0-10 on the season with the loss. The Blue Jays will be back in action on Tuesday, January 5, hosting Elms College at 7:00 p.m.
 
Colby-Sawyer is now 6-4 for the season. The Chargers will return to the court on Tuesday, January 5 to host North Atlantic Conference foe Johnson State at 5:30 p.m.
