NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 19, 2016 – Junior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) scored a game best 18 points to lead the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a 61-44 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Lyndon State College on Tuesday evening.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Chargers head to Maine this weekend for games at Thomas on Friday and UMaine-Farmington on Saturday. Lyndon drops to 3-11 overall and 2-7 in the NAC. The Hornets will begin a four game home stand on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Pine Manor.
The Chargers took a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter, but Lyndon used a 9-0 run capped by a pair of free throws from freshman Samantha Thurston (Bath, N.H.) to take an 11-6 lead. The lead went to eight at 16-8 before Iannone ended the quarter with a bucket to keep the Chargers close after one, 16-10.
Colby-Sawyer held the Hornets to just two field goals in the second quarter and outscored the visitors 10-5 to only trail by one, after a pair of free throws by Iannone, to end the half 21-20.
The home team regained the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter after Iannone sank two more freebies 2:10 into the third. The Chargers would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way and finished the frame with a 16-4 advantage in the paint to take a 45-34 lead after three.
Colby-Sawyer held a double-digit lead for the fourth quarter and went on to win by a final of 61-44.
Iannone added seven boards to her game best 18 points. Junior
Marquis MacGlashing (Cape Neddick, Maine) had six points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Junior
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) added eight points, seven rebounds, six steals and five blocks. Sophomore
Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and seven boards.
Lyndon was led by leading scorer and rebounder, sophomore Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.). She recorded a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds to go along with four blocks. Senior Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) scored a team best 15 points and pulled down six boards.
