NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 14, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Castleton 62-44 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action, Thursday evening.
Castleton improves to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the NAC. The Spartans will host New England College at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Colby-Sawyer falls to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Chargers travel to Green Mountain on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip.
Senior
Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) was the only Colby-Sawyer player in double figures, with 17 points and four steals. Junior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) added nine points, while juniors
Marquis MacGlashing (Cape Neddick, Maine) and
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) grabbed eight boards apiece.
Castleton was led by sophomore duo Amanda Beatty and Makayla Farrara. Beatty had 17 points in the first half and finished with 21 to go with eight rebounds and one block. Farrara, meanwhile, finished 4-for-5 from downtown while adding one steal and one block to go with her 21 points. Senior Bryanna duPont added four points, six rebounds and five steals.
Colby-Sawyer got on the scoreboard first after a Shenkel three, two minutes into the game. The Spartans received a Taylor Raiche bucket at 6:53 and then Beatty layup one minute later for the 4-3 advantage. Castleton stayed in front for the remainder of the quarter. Trailing 13-7, Colby-Sawyer scored the final four points of the frame to cut the deficit to 13-11.
Shenkel put the Chargers in front 14-13 just 47 seconds into the second and the teams traded baskets over the next three minutes. Beatty gave Castleton an 18-17 lead at 6:16 and the Spartans increased the advantage to 24-20 with 3:49 left. Colby-Sawyer cut the lead to three points in the final two minutes but Beatty connected on a pair of free throws for the 32-27 advantage at the break.
The Chargers were outscored 17-5 in the third and 13-12 in the fourth to give Castleton the 62-44 victory.
