Women's Lacrosse Wins Sixth Straight

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - April 23, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team pushed its winning streak to six after a 13-6 victory at Rhode Island College on Thursday evening.

The Chargers improve to 9-5 and will host New England College on Saturday for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament first round matchup at 1:00 p.m. The Anchorwomen fall to 0-12.

Colby-Sawyer opened the game on an 8-0 run, capped by a goal from freshman midfielder Bailey Starr off a feed by senior attacker Alyssia Janak with 14:44 remaining in the first half. RIC  senior attacker Danielle Landon notched the next goal to cut the deficit to seven, 8-1, but the Chargers scored three goals in the final 14 minutes to take an 11-1 lead into the break.

Landon tallied her second of the game 20 seconds into the second half off a feed from sophomore midfielder Betsy Heidel, but Colby-Sawyer freshman attack Nicole Lavigne responded with a free position tally to give the Chargers a 12-2 advantage.

Freshman attacker Erin Durigan, classmate defender Allison Smedberg and senior attacker Jessica Ricci tallied the next three goals in the contest to make the score 12-5, but that is as close as the Anchorwomen would get as the two teams traded one goal apiece over the final minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Alasondra Apici was sensational in net for the Anchorwomen, stopping 20 shots in the defeat. Colby-Sawyer sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Castellano stopped six in the victory.

Lavigne paced the Chargers with three goals, while Alyssia Janak notched a team-best three helpers. Janak moved into fifth on the all-time career assists list with 40 and has the third most assists in a single season with 25 this year.

RIC was led offensively by Landon's three goals, while Ricci finished with one goal and one assist.

Colby-Sawyer held a narrow, 27-22, advantage in ground balls and a 13-8 advantage in draw controls.
