Pilgrims Take Two From Chargers

HENNIKER, N.H. – April 23, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped both ends of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at New England College Thursday afternoon, 11-2 and 11-5.
 
With the wins the Pilgrims improve to 10-10 on the season and 7-13 in NAC play. The losses drop the Chargers to 1-27 overall and 1-17 in the NAC.

GAME ONE - NEC 11, CSC 2
 
NEC started the scoring in the home half of the second inning as Matt Krum and Conor Crouse reached on back-to-back singles and Stanley Petteway on a fielder's choice. Krum would come around to score on a ground ball off the bat of Joe Paliotte followed by a two-run double off the bat of Christopher Smith that would score both Crouse and Petteway.
 
Colby-Sawyer got one run back in the top of the third as Joey Fenuccio opened the inning with a single down the left field line, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Nathan Frongillo. Fenuccio would then manufacture a run as Frongillo would get caught in a run-down enabling Fenuccio to cross the plate.
 
The Pilgrims would tack on five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Jordan Hubbard. NEC added two runs in the fourth and a single tally in the sixth extending their lead to 11-1 heading into the final innings.
 
Colby-Sawyer would get a run in the top half of the seventh as pinch-hitter Shawn McCarthy drew a walk and scored all the way from first on a single to left center field by pinch-hitter Quincy Logan. NEC's Vincent Backert would get the final outs forcing a game-ending ground ball double play.
 
NEC's Vincent Backert picked up the complete game victory allowing just the two earned runs on four hits and striking out five.
 
NEC's Matt Krum finished game one 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. NEC's Conor Crouse was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored, while Christopher Smith drove in four runs for the Pilgrims.
 
Colby-Sawyer's Quincy Logan drove in a run with a single, while Nathan Frongillo singled and scored a run for the Chargers.

GAME TWO - NEC 11, CSC 5
 
In game two the Pilgrims jumped out to an eight run lead, with only three being earned. Matt Krum and Christopher Smith would highlight the first as Krum doubled to left field scoring two and Smith singled to left field plating another two runs.
 
NEC would add a run in the second inning to go up 9-0 before Colby-Sawyer would get on the board in the third plating three runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Brendan Thurber.
 
The Pilgrims added single runs in both in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 11-3. The Chargers would not give up scoring two runs in the top half of the sixth inning thanks to a throwing error on the Pilgrims and a run scoring double off the bat of Connor Henry. NEC would keep the Chargers off the board in the seventh inning eventually holding on for the 11-5 victory.
 
NEC's Christopher Smith picked up the complete game victory on the mound allowing four earned runs on five hits and striking out five.
 
NEC's Conor Crouse was 4-for-4 at the plate in game two with two runs driven in and a run scored. Christopher Smith finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs driven in, while Matt Krum drove in two runs as well for the Pilgrims.

Colby-Sawyer's Nathan Frongillo finished game two with two hits, while Thurber drove in two runs and scored twice for the Chargers.
