NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team had its home opening doubleheader spoiled by Castleton State College on Tuesday afternoon. Castleton won both North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games by scores of 5-3 and 16-3.
The Spartans improve to 14-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference, while Colby-Sawyer dips to 0-17 overall and 0-8 in NAC play. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Castleton with a first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
GAME 1 – CASTLETON 5, COLBY-SAWYER 3Castleton scored single runs in the top of the first and third on a pair of Dan Errico (West Hartford, Conn.) RBI singles.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from senior Tyler Lord (South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Zach Bahan (Shaftsbury, Vt.) and an RBI walk from Errico.
Colby-Sawyer broke through in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on a double from freshman
Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) that plated
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) and
Brett Emmertz (Falmouth, Maine).
The Chargers put across a third run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Frongillo.
Both pitchers went the distance as Castleton's Luke Salerno (Essex Junction, Vt.) improved to 1-1 with seven strong innings and six strikeouts. Colby-Sawyer's
Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) suffered the loss, but struck out four and had a pick-off.
Castleton was led by a 3-for-4 effort from sophomore Nick Swim (St. Albans, Vt.). Errico knocked in three runs on two hits, while Lord finished with a pair of hits and two runs scored.
Frongillo led the Chargers with a pair of hits.
GAME 2 – CASTLETON 16, Colby-Sawyer 3Castleton's offense was in full swing in the night cap with 18 hits, including a pair of homeruns.
Sophomore Jim Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) was 4-for-5 with a game-high five RBI and three runs scored. He stepped to the plate in the third with the bases loaded and hit a shot to right field that bounced off the top of the fence back onto the field for a bases clearing double.
Senior Tyler Hoare (Waterbury, Vt.) was 2-for-4, including a two-run blast to center field. He knocked in four runs and scored once.
Dan Errico (West Hartford, Conn.) hit a two-run homerun over the left field fence and finished the game with three RBI.
Tyler Lord (South Burlington, Vt.) added three hits and three runs scored.
Nathan Frongillo led the Chargers at the plate with three hits in four at-bats. Freshman
Brendan Thurber was 1-for-1 with an RBI, a run and three walks.
