Kelsey Cahill moved into eighth in career points with 1,118 after scoring 15 tonight, but it was not enough as Maine Maritime Academy defeated the Chargers, 62-56, inside of Smith Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference play.
The Mariners improve to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in NAC play while the Chargers fall to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the conference.The Mariners fought back from an early 11-point deficit following two threes and a jumper from Mackenzie Vosburgh, and a three-pointer from Mary Badeen, to take a 24-22 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. Kristi Willey sunk a three-pointer to put the Mariners up 27-23 with 45 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws from the Chargers closed the Mariner led to 27-25 entering halftime.
Colby-Sawyer tied the score at 27-27 with 17:29 remaining in the game, but the Mariners never relinquished the lead in the second half, shooting a perfect 18-18 from the line. The Chargers tied it up at 41-41 with 5:53 remaining but the Mariners responded with a combined nine-unanswered points from Willey and Badeen to take a 50-41 lead with a little over two minutes left.
The Chargers were efficient from behind the arc in the closing minutes, scoring their last 15 points on three-pointers, but the Mariners were strong from the line, and hung on to claim the 62-56 victory.
Badeen ended the evening with a game-high 16 points, including a perfect 8 for 8 from the line, nine rebounds, and three assists, while Vosburgh picked up 14 points, three assists, a rebound and steal, and Willey contributed 13 points, a team-best four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Kelsey Cahill and
Katie McCarthy led the Chargers with 15 points each, while
Jessica Shenkel added 12 points.
Maine Maritime moves on to host another tough NAC opponent, New England College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., while the Chargers travel to face Husson. also at 3:00 p.m.
