Zach Elmore Nets Hat Trick in 3-2 Win over Thomas

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 4, 2015 – Colby-Sawyer sophomore Zach Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) recorded a hat trick to lead the men's soccer team to a 3-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Thomas College on Sunday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the NAC. The Chargers will travel to Lyndon on Saturday and Johnson State on Sunday. Thomas dips to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Terriers will continue NAC play next weekend with home matches with Green Mountain and Castleton.

Elmore gave the Chargers a quick 1-0 lead 3:34 into the game when he received a through ball from sophomore Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) and scored into the left side of the net. The assist was Sexton's 14th career helper moving him into a tie for sixth place on the program's all-time list.

Eight minutes later, Elmore snuck his second goal of the game into the net off the left post off a feed from freshman Anthony Romeo (Waterford, N.Y.).

The celebration of a two goal lead was quickly halted as Thomas cut the deficit in half 30 seconds later. Senior Tre Ming (Devonshire, Bermuda) ripped a shot from 20 yards that was just inside the right post and past the diving Colby-Sawyer keeper. Freshman Josh Emard (Lebanon, Maine) was credited with the assist.

Thomas held an 11-3 edge in first half shots, but the Chargers took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Elmore got his hat trick less than five minutes into the second frame when a ball from sophomore Jake Sykes (Laconia, N.H.) cross the box and found his foot. Elmore calmly scored the ball into the opposite corner of the goal.

Thomas came within a goal with 13 minutes remaining when freshman Adam LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine) put back a rebound off his own shot.

The Chargers defense was able to hold up in the final minutes and secure the 3-2 victory.

Freshman Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.) finished with seven saves for his first collegiate win. Joakim Sternas (Stockholm, Sweden) made one save in the loss for the Terriers.

Thomas outshot the Chargers 22-10 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
