Women's Soccer Ties Wheaton, 2-2

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 24, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team earned a 2-2 tie with Wheaton College on Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.

Wheaton (5-3-1) will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match at WPI. Colby-Sawyer (2-5-1) will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at intrastate rival, New England College at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The teams played a back and forth possession game in the first 20 minutes, before the Lyons struck in the 23rd minute. Senior Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J.) sent a beautiful cross to junior teammate Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn.) who found open space away from the Colby-Sawyer back line. Cipriano deposited the shot into the net for her fourth tally of the season.

Colby-Sawyer found an equalizer in the 36th minute when junior Tallon Tomasi (Williston, Vt.) used her body to score on a loose ball in traffic.

The Lyons held a slim, 7-6, margin in shots at the break, while Colby-Sawyer fashioned a 2-0 differential in corner kicks.

At the 64:38 mark, Corigliano pushed the Lyons in front by a 2-1 score with a header on a cross by Cipriano near the left post for her fourth goal of the season. Fifteen minutes and eight seconds later, Tomasi responded once again for Colby-Sawyer with the equalizer. Tomasi found a loose ball off a corner kick and placed it behind Wheaton goalkeeper Lauren Thacker (Brunswick, Maine) through a wall of traffic into the back of the net, eventually forcing overtime.

Wheaton had three quality scoring chances in the extra sessions, but Colby-Sawyer junior goalkeeper Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) turned away all three opportunities for the ensuing tie. Hamilton finished with a game-high seven saves, while Thacker thwarted two shots.
