HOLDERNESS, N.H. - September 10, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team was defeated by Plymouth State, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Chargers drop to 2-3 and will participate in the Grass Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday. Plymouth improves to 2-0 and travels to Johnson State on Saturday. 

Senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J./) won her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Panthers.

The team match was very close, with four of the six singles encounters going to three sets. PSU led 2-1 after the doubles round, and each school won a singles match in straight sets to make it 3-2 in favor of Plymouth State. Jakubas pulled out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, but Colby-Sawyer answered with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win by freshman Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) at No. 2 singles to keep the team score close.

PSU clinched the team outcome when senior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, N.Y.) came from down a set to earn a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, and junior Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) did the same at No. 5 singles to round out the scoring with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision.

Zara Jakubas teamed with sister Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) for an 8-2 victory at No.1 doubles, and Ioannides and sophomore Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) won by the same score at No. 2. Colby-Sawyer's win in doubles came at No. 3 by freshman Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) and senior Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.), 8-6.
