NEW LONDON, N.H. – August 29, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team fell to non-conference foe Endicott, 9-0 in the 2014 season opener on Friday afternoon at Kelsey Tennis Courts.
Endicott (1-0) will play at Wellesley tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., while the Chargers (0-1) will host Gordon tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
The Gulls began the afternoon with strong play at all three doubles positions. The top duo of Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) and Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) dispatched Colby-Sawyer's
Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamstead, Conn.) and
Sam White (Stockbridge, Mass.), 8-4. Endicott's Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) teamed with Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) at No. 2 and defeated freshmen duo
Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and
Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.), 8-5. The visitors swept doubles play with an 8-3 win at No. 3. Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) and Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) defeated
Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.) and
Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.), 8-3.
Heacox (#1, 6-4, 6-4), Reilly (#3, 6-2, 6-1), Newman (#4, 6-0, 6-1), and Rhodes (#6, 6-0, 6-0) secured the Gulls' victory with straight set wins. Natalie Egbert (Gorham, Maine) received a tough match from
Ashley Woodside, who forced a tie break in the first set. Egbert was able to come away with a 7-6 win after a 7-4 tie-break in the first and then closed the match with a 6-1 set two victory. Brittany Potter was pushed to three sets at No. 5 by
Lauren Blanchard in the closest match of the afternoon. After dropping the first set 6-4, Blanchard fought back with a convincing 6-2 win in the second. Both players dueled in the third set, but Potter earned a 10-8 triumph to take the match.
