NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 13, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team defeated Lyndon State, 75-50 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Chargers travel to Puerto Rico on December 28-29 for a pair of games in the San Juan Shootout. Lyndon drops to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the NAC. The Hornets will resume play after the New Year on Thursday, January 8 at Simmons.
The Chargers led wire to wire and held the Hornets to 28.6 percent shooting. Colby-Sawyer forced 28 miscues, which led to a 34-12 edge in points off turnovers.
Senior
Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) led the Chargers with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, which included 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Senior
Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also had five steals to give her 205 career thefts, moving her into seventh on the all-time list. Sophomore
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) added 12 points and eight caroms off the bench. Sophomore
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) filled the box score with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Lyndon was led by freshman center Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.). She recorded a double-double of a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Emily Gray (Quincy, Mass.) also reached double figures with 12 points.
Colby-Sawyer used strong shooting and stout defense in the first 20 minutes to take a 42-13 lead at the break. The Chargers shot 52.9 percent while holding Lyndon to four made baskets. Ellis scored all nine of her points in the first half to lead all scorers.
The Hornets outscored the home team 37-33 in the second half thanks to a strong effort by their post players. Lyndon poured in 16 points in the paint with Hodge going 6-of-10 from the floor to score 12 of her 14 points in the second frame. The visitors also erased a 10-rebound halftime deficit to finish the game with a 47-45 edge on the boards.
