NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 18, 2014 – UMass Boston received a pair of double-doubles from senior Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Karl Agenor (Dorchester, Mass.) in Tuesday's 75-62 win at Colby-Sawyer College.
The Beacons improve to 1-0 and will host Suffolk on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer evens its record at 1-1 and will play a pair of games at the Rivier Tip-Off tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Joseph poured in a game-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting and grabbed 10 boards. Agenor scored 14 points and pulled down a game best 17 rebounds. Senior Gregory Young (Dorchester, Mass.) also reached double figures with 12 points.
Colby-Sawyer was led by a 16-point, eight rebound effort from senior
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.). Junior
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) also scored 16 points. Junior
Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) added 10 points and six rebounds.
The Beacons began the game with a 13-2 run capped by a three -point play from Agenor. The lead was increased to 19 five minutes later with Joseph scoring six points in a Beacons 8-2 run.
The Chargers battled back on a hot stretch from
Mike Dias, which included a jumper at the buzzer to end the half 36-27 in favor of the visitors. Dias scored 11 first half points to lead all players.
Carl Joseph scored the first five points of the second frame to give the Beacons a 14 point edge. Trailing 41-27, the Chargers began to find space in the paint and used a 9-0 run capped by a
Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) layup to cut the deficit to five at 41-36. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that would be as close as they would get to a comeback as UMass Boston was able to hold a comfortable advantage for final seven minutes of the game.
After an even rebounding first half with each side grabbing 23 caroms, the Beacons finished the game with a 56-37 edge on the boards.
