Men's Tennis to Play Former CCC Foe Nichols in NCAA First Round

NEW LONDON, N.H. - May 6, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer men's tennis team will play Nichols College of the Commonwealth Coast Conference on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The match will be played in Williamstown, Mass. at Williams College. The time of the match will be 9:30 am.

The Chargers (14-7) will make their first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bison (18-5) won a second straight CCC title after a 5-1 win over Roger Williams. 

The winner of the Colby-Sawyer/Nichols match will play the host Ephs of Williams. 

The other Thursday first round match is between Skidmore (11-8) and UMass Boston (14-3). The winner will play MIT (15-2).

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first, second and third rounds played at regional sites, May 9-12. Kalamazoo College will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 20-22 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 8.

The championships provide for a 44-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 30 conference champions, which form "Pool A." Seven teams are selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining seven teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.

Emory University is the defending champion.
