Men's Basketball Sinks New England College, 94-62

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 5, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's basketball team defeated New England College, 94-62, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Tuesday evening.  

Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-11 overall and 10-4 in the NAC. The Pilgrims fall to 1-20 overall and 1-13 in conference play.

The Chargers received career-highs from sophomore Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.). Bean led all scorers with 22 points on 9-12 shooting, while Majong was 7-10 from the floor for 19 points. Senior Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) was the third Charger to reach double-figures with 11 points. He added seven assists. Junior Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.) collected a game best eight assists and moved into 10th in all-time career assists with 226.

New England College was paced by freshman Jaskin Melendez (Bronx, N.Y.). He scored 11 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Senior Abdirahman Mohamed (Biddeford, Maine) had nine points, five assists and three steals.

The Pilgrims held a slim lead three minutes into the game before a Bean three-pointer tied the contest at 7-7. After each team traded a pair of baskets, the Chargers began to create separation with a 13-4 run capped by a pair of free throws by Thorpe. Colby-Sawyer finished the final five minutes of the first half on a 19-8 run to give them a 55-33 edge at the break. Majong scored 14 in the frame, while Bean added 12.

Colby-Sawyer held at least a 21-point advantage throughout the second half en route to the 32-point victory.

The Chargers, who shot 56.7%, turned 26 Pilgrim miscues into 40 points.

Colby-Sawyer travels to Maine this weekend for a pair of games. The Chargers tip off at 5:30 pm on Friday at Husson and then play at Maine Maritime on Saturday at 1:00 pm.  New England College, who is Colby-Sawyer's travel partner, will play Maine Maritime on Friday and Husson on Saturday.
