Plymouth State Escapes With 59-55 Win Over Men's Basketball

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 3, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's basketball team fell to Plymouth State, 59-55 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at the David L. Coffin Field House.

The Panthers improve to 5-1 and will host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in a Little East Conference season opener. Colby-Sawyer falls to 1-2 and plays at Keene on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Both teams struggled to control the ball and find the shooting touch in the first half. Plymouth had 15 turnovers and shot 32%, while the Chargers shot 31% and had 14 miscues. The play was sloppy throughout the frame and featured five ties, including the half ending score of 22-22. Colby-Sawyer received 20 of its 22 points from junior Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) and sophomore Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) who scored 10 points apiece. Plymouth had eight players in the scoring column led by a five-point effort from freshman Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.).

The second half was played at a frantic pace and had seven lead changes. Plymouth shot the ball better at a 52% clip, but let the Chargers stay in the game with 12 more turnovers. The Panthers held a slim 57-53 lead with less than 30 seconds to play when Colby-Sawyer's Wol Majong stepped to the free throw line and knocked in a pair to pull the home team within two at 57-55. The Chargers called a timeout to set up their defense and forced a turnover with 17 seconds on the clock. Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) created space in the lane and took a 12-footer that clanged off the rim into the hands of Plymouth's Uche Nwokeji (Lynn, Mass.). Nwokeji was fouled and then calmly knocked down both free throw attempts to put the game away 59-55.

Nwokeji led the Panthers with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Eight of his 14 points came at the line. Junior Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.) added 11 points, eight boards and three steals. Sophomore Logan Kesty (New Boston, N.H.) went 4-6 for 10 points off the bench.

Majong led Colby-Sawyer with a game-high 17 points. Mike Dias finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) added 11 points and eight boards. 

Plymouth, who had its lowest scoring output of the season, held a 43-33 edge on the glass and turned 23 Colby-Sawyer miscues into 21 points.
