Alex Ortega Nets Second Hat-Trick of Season in 6-1 Win over Green Mountain

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 8, 2013 – Junior Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.) scored his second hat-trick of the season to help lift the Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team to a 6-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over Green Mountain, on Tuesday evening.

BOX SCORE

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the NAC, while the Eagles fall to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Sophomore Isaac Nichols (Sturbridge, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game for Colby-Sawyer in the 11th minute. Nichols was wide open on the left side of the box when he received a cross from junior Carlton Wheeler-Omiunu (Bellingham, Mass.) to record his second goal of the season.

Ortega gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead after the Green Mountain defense failed to clear the ball out of the backfield. Ortega fired a bending shot towards the far post of the net where the ball snuck into the corner for his ninth tally of the year.

Green Mountain cut the deficit in half in the 33rd minute when the strikers set up a two-on-one advantage. Junior Matt Kukola (Blackwood, N.J.) was dribbling to the right of the defender when he passed the ball to senior Chukwuemeka Ugorji (Abuja, Nigeria) who deposited the ball into the net for his team leading fourth goal of the season.

Ortega pushed Colby-Sawyer's lead back to a pair of goals just before the half on another laser shot that was over the goalie's head and below the crossbar.

Colby-Sawyer took a 4-1 lead one minute into the second half on an own goal when a Green Mountain player miss-hit a clearing attempt that went into the net.

The hat-trick for Ortega came in the 53rd minute when the Chargers were awarded a free kick in the middle of the field from 22 yards out. Ortega took the free kick and scored past the dive of the Green Mountain keeper. The goal was Ortega's 11th of the season, which is the third highest single season goal total in Colby-Sawyer history.

Colby-Sawyer senior Drew Pehoviak (Monson, Mass.) added a sixth goal at 73:09, scoring off a nice through ball from junior Max Yee (Hooksett, N.H.)

Junior Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) earned the victory in net for the Chargers and made two saves. Green Mountain goalie Nate Laymon (Ilion, N.Y.) made 10 saves, including several diving stops, in the loss.

The Chargers outshot the Eagles 23-8 and had 11 corners to Green Mountain's none.

Colby-Sawyer hits the road on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. NAC contest at Maine Maritime. Green Mountain travels to Southern Vermont for a 12:30 p.m. tilt with the Mountaineers.
