NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 5, 2013 – The Husson University men's basketball team held on for a 73-71 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory at Colby-Sawyer on Saturday afternoon.
Husson improves to 6-4 overall and moves into a tie atop the NAC with a 4-1 record. Colby-Sawyer falls to 3-8 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
The first half featured four ties and five lead changes. Husson held its biggest lead of eight at 15-7, after a 9-0 run was capped off by a jumper from senior Eric Modica (Kittery, Maine). Colby-Sawyer was able to come back and take a 39-37 lead at the break when senior
Paul Holland (England, UK) hit a layup as time expired. Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Kyle Nelson (Milford, N.H.) scored all 13 of his points in the frame. Husson received points from all 10 players who saw first half action.
The second half was played as tightly as the first with five more ties and seven lead changes. Colby-Sawyer held the momentum early in the stanza and jumped out to an eight point advantage after a
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) lay-in. With the game knotted at 65-65, Husson went on an 8-0 spurt capped by a layup by senior Wes Murphy (Norwich, Conn.). The Chargers battled back scoring the next six points and had a chance with 20 second remaining to tie or take the lead. The Husson defense was able to hold the Chargers to a contested shot and held on for the 73-71 win.
Senior Brooks Spaulding (Fairfield, Maine) and Modica led the Eagles with 14 points apiece. Spaulding added a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Marc Zaharchuk (Richmond, Maine) added 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Dias led Colby-Sawyer with 16 points. Holland finished with 11 points on 4-5 shooting. Freshman
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added 10 points. Senior
Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) contributed a game-high six assists.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Green Mountain on Thursday for a 7:30 pm tip. Husson plays at Thomas on Tuesday with a 7:30 pm start.
