NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 12, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's basketball team earned a 76-67 victory over Castleton in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-8 overall and 5-3 in the NAC. Castleton drops to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) led the Chargers with 16 points on 6-9 shooting. He also brought down seven rebounds, six of them coming on the offensive glass. Sophomore
Kyle Nelson (Milford, N.H.) added 14 points and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore
Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) also reached double-figures with 12 points.
Senior
Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) collected six assists, which moved him into third on Colby-Sawyer's all-time assists list with 420.
The Spartans were led by a game-high 23 points from junior Logan White (Hartford, Vt.). He was 6-11 from beyond the arc. Junior Jeremy Odena (Boston, Mass.) had 12 points, while junior Tyler Ackley (Scotia, N.Y.) was the third Castleton player to reach double-digits with 11 points. Senior Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) struggled shooting the ball (2-14), but had six points, six assists and a game best nine rebounds.
Castleton went on top 2-0 after a pair of free throws on the game's first possession. The Chargers responded with a 15-1 spurt over the next 3:21 capped by a Thok trey to take a lead that they would not surrender. The Spartans cut the deficit to a bucket with 7:23 left in the first after an 11-2 run ended with a White three-pointer. Colby-Sawyer was able to rebuild its lead with an 8-0 run over the final three minutes of the frame and held a 40-30 edge at the break.
The Colby-Sawyer advantage ballooned to 18, 2:12 into the second half after a jumper from Nelson and a pair of three-pointers from sophomore
Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine). Castleton began to chip away at the Chargers lead and eventually cut the deficit to three 61-58 with 7:10 left. A Dias layup and five points from junior
Cody Addison (Washington, D.C.) pushed the home team back on top 68-58, which helped secure a 76-67 victory.
Colby-Sawyer plays at Dartmouth College on Thursday at 7:00 pm. The Spartans will host Middlebury on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
