Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 at Castleton in Regular Season Finale

BOX SCORE

CASTLETON, Vt. – October 23, 2012 - The Spartans closed their regular season with a 2-0 win over North Atlantic Conference foe Colby-Sawyer College on senior night at Spartan Stadium. Nick Johnas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and John Kendall (Springfield, Vt.) both tallied scores, while Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) earned his sixth shutout of the year.

Castleton finishes the regular season at 11-6, 5-4 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer drops to 5-10-2, 4-5 in the NAC. Both teams return to action on Oct. 27 for quarterfinal action in the NAC Tournament.

The contest was scoreless until the 25th minute. Castleton was fouled just inside the near corner of the box. The team was awarded a penalty shot and Johnas converted to make it a 1-0 contest.

The Spartans continued to press the advantage, creating numerous opportunities; however goalie Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) played extremely aggressively, coming out of his box multiple times to foil Castleton's scoring chances. Thanks to his efforts, the Chargers remained within a goal at the half.

In the second period, the Spartans controlled the pace of play, outshooting the Chargers 15-1. Castleton consistently pressed offensively, forcing Austin to make several plays on through balls and breakaways.

The Castleton offense forced the tempo, and eventually broke through again. On a four-on-one breakaway, Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.) found Kendall wide open at the top of the box, and the freshman placed it in the bottom corner lifting the Spartans to a 2-0 advantage.

Koenemann earned the win for the Spartans in net without making a save. Austin made eight saves for the Chargers in a losing effort.
