Chargers Score Twice in First Half in 2-1 Win over Johnson

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 14, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Johnson State in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers improve to 5-8-2 overall and 4-3 in the NAC, which is good for fifth place in the standings. Johnson falls to 1-14 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Sophomore Chris DiCecca (Wilmington, Mass.) scored his team leading fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute to put the Chargers up 1-0.

Colby-Sawyer increased its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute. Junior Cooper McNealus (Saxtons River, Vt.) collected a deflection from a Johnson defender and ripped a shot into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out. The goal was McNealus' first of the season.

The Badgers were able to cut the deficit in half in the 78th minute when freshman Brendan Mulhern (Durham, N.H.) beat the Colby-Sawyer keeper to the right side of the net.

Sophomore Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) made one save in the Colby-Sawyer win. Johnson keeper Sam Martin (Essex, Vt.) had 12 stops on the afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer outshot the Badgers 23-7 and held a 16-5 edge in corner kicks.

Colby-Sawyer steps out of NAC play to host perennial power Middlebury on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. Johnson State hosts Castleton on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
