Men's Basketball Earns Regular Season Sweep of NEC with 85-62 Win

HENNIKER, N.H. - January 31, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team earned the regular season sweep over New England College after a 85-62 victory on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Confererence (NAC) action at Bridges Gym.

Colby-Sawyer pushes its win streak to five as they improve to to 13-6 overall and 10-2 in league play. With the loss, the Pilgrims fall to 5-14 overall and 4-8 in NAC play.

The Pilgrims would trade baskets with the Chargers in the opening minutes of the game and took a one-point lead with 15:37 remaining in the first half, but the Chargers would respond with an 8-1 run to take the 19-11 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the half.  The Chargers would lead by as much at 18 points in the final ten minutes of the first half, but a late Pilgrims run would bring the score within 13 points, 44-31, entering halftime.

The Chargers netted 17 of the 39 field goals they took in the first half, good for 43.6 percent shooting, including 34.8 percent shooting from behind the three-point arc.  The Pilgrims shot 43.3 percent in the first half on 13-30 shooting.

The Chargers extended the lead to 25 points in the early minutes of the second half, but the Pilgrims continued to chip away at the lead on 65 percent second-half field-goal shooting and trailed by as few as 12 points with three minutes left to play in the game.

Leading the offensive effort for the Pilgrims was Ryan Schmitz (Redding, Calif.) who totaled 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor and 3-4 shooting from three-point range.  Schmitz also added a team-high five rebounds. Steven Cronin (New Milford, Conn.) added 13 points and four rebounds, while Spencer Marzouk (Greensboro, N.C.) added nine points on 3-4 shooting from the floor and 3-6 shooting from the foul line.

The Chargers were led by Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) who totaled a game-high 20 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor.  James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Colby-Sawyer, while Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) scored 13 points and added eight rebounds.

The Pilgrims return to action on Friday, February 3 when they travel to Thomas College for a 7:30 p.m. NAC matchup.  The Chargers will also be in action on Friday, as they travel to take on UMaine-Farmington at 7:30 p.m. in NAC play.
