BOX SCORE
NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 10, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team fell to Amherst, who is the 19th ranked team in the nation, 3-0 on Saturday.
Amherst (1-0-0) plays at Bridgewater on Sunday at 3:00pm, while the Chargers (0-3-0) will host Clark on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
The Lord Jeffs received goals from sophomore Jae Heo (Changwon, S. Korea), junior Casey McNamara (Montclair, N.J.), and junior Brian Morgan (Harvard, Mass.).
The first 33 minutes of the game saw each team with equal possession that did not result in any scoring. Amherst turned up the offense in the 34th minute when Heo collected a flick from junior teammate Spencer Noon (Farmington, Conn.). Heo did the rest as he ripped a shot into the upper corner of the net.
The Lord Jeffs increased their advantage three minutes later on a tally from McNamara. Senior T.J. Kelley (Walnut Creek, Calif.) took a corner and sent the ball towards the top of the six yard box where junior Federico Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela) headed the ball to the foot of McNamara.
Colby-Sawyer goalie Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) kept the Chargers within striking distance as he saved a couple of sure goals from touching the back of the net. He collected four saves in the first half and finished the game with seven.
Amherst tacked on a third goal in the 73rd minute. Freshman Mike Hoeksema (Bethany, Conn.) fired a shot on net, but Berry saved a goal for the Chargers. However, the deflection went right to a waiting Morgan, who calmly put the ball into an open net.
Amherst keeper Lennard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) was tested just three times and completed the saves on each occasion. Junior Brandon Saldana (Garden City, N.Y.) saw 14 minutes in the visitors net and made no saves.
