Men's Basketball Holds On to Defeat UNE, 72-69

KEENE, N.H. - November 19, 2011 - On day two of the 12th annual Keene State College men's basketball Tip-Off Classic, the Colby-Sawyer Chargers held on for their first victory of the 2011-12 season with a 72-69 victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Chargers, who led by as many as 11 in the second-half, needed a pair of Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) free-throws with one second remaining to hold on for the three-point win.

Colby-Sawyer senior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) gave the Chargers their largest lead of the contest with a pair of free throws at the 12:39 mark, for the 53-42 advantage.

UNE came storming back into the game, as freshman guard Jordan Ferreira's (Nantucket, Mass.) scored five consecutive points, cutting into the Chargers lead at 67-63 with 3:30 remaining in regulation.

Nor'Easter freshman guard Timmy Mains (Auburn, Maine) cut the lead to two, on a nice up-and-under layup with 2:27 left to play.

Bardaglio answered for the Chargers, with a bucket and a free throw with 1:03 left to extend the lead to 70-65.

Mains would hit another key jumper in the lane, and Alex Alsadi's (Endina, Minn.) put-back layup made it a one point contest again with 40 seconds remaining. Thok's free throws put the game out of reach, handing Colby-Sawyer their first win of the season.

In a back-and-forth first half, senior guard Jarryd Rossignol (Caribou, Maine) led all scorers with 15 points for the Nor'Easters to keep them in the game at the break. Shooting 7-of-10 from the field, Rossignol knocked down his only three-pointer of the half, to give UNE their largest advantage at 11-8 with 14:31 to play.

After Colby-Sawyer freshman Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) gave the Chargers their largest lead of the half at 35-30 with 2:37 remaining in the first, UNE freshman guard Jordan Ferreira's (Nantucket, Mass.) three pointer with 1:06 remaining cut the lead to 35-33 at the break.

Mains led all scorers with 16 points and also had four rebounds and three assists in the losing effort. Rossignol was held scoreless in the second half, but totaled 15 points. Senior forward Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Alsadi also pitched in with 15 points apiece in the losing effort.

For the Chargers, Bardaglio had a team-high 14 points. Freshman forward Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) and Bean each had 11 points, while Thok rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points in the victory. Dias was named to the All-Classic Team.
