Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Keene, 87-73

CONCORD, N.H. – November 15, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell to the Owls of Keene State, 87-73 in Concord, N.H. at the annual Jacob's Bridge through Autism Classic hosted by NHTI.

The Owls, who improve to 12-0 all-time in this tournament, open the season at 1-0, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 0-1 and 2-10 in the tournament. 

Keene was led by junior Eric Fazio (Hopewell, Junction, N.Y.) who recorded a double-double with a 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior teammate Ollie Hunter (Bedford, N.H.) poured in a game best 19 points on 8-11 shooting.

Sophomore center Montel Walcott (New Haven, Conn.) scored just five points, but had a big impact on the glass and defensive end. He brought in 10 rebounds and collected a game-high five blocks. Junior Ryan Martin (Wayne, Maine) and junior Anthony Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.) registered 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Colby-Sawyer was paced by a 15 point performance off the bench from junior Paul Holland (England, UK). All of his points came via the three-pointer. Freshman Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) recorded a double-double in his first collegiate game with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine), who played his high school ball with Keene's Ryan Martin, poured in 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Sophomore Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.) had six points and a game-high eight assists.

The Owls held a 41-33 edge at the break and built their lead in the second thanks to a 24-16 edge in the paint. They controlled the inside throughout the game and outscored the Chargers 50-32.

The Chargers will play in a four team tournament that begins on Friday hosted by Keene. Colby-Sawyer squares off with St. Lawrence at 9:00 pm on Friday and then plays former foe from The Commonwealth Coast Conference, the University of New England, on Saturday at 5:00 pm. Keene will play UNE on Friday at 7:00 pm.
